Description

*USA-Korea, 1960's, 8th Army Honor Guard M1 Helmet Liner – “United States” & “Honor Guard” Painted Decals (1969 DSA Contract)*

Original U.S. 8th Army M1 helmet liner used in a ceremonial Honor Guard role during the 1960's in Korea. This gloss black liner features decals of the United States flag on one side and the Honor Guard on the other.

The American M1 helmet of the second world war consisted of a two-piece design, an outer protective steel shell and an inner fibre liner. Both components were one-size-fits all. It was the removable liner with headband which allowed for a specific fit to the wearer's head. The M1 helmet liner was used by the U.S. military from World War II to the 1980s. Liners were made of strips of cotton cloth bathed in phenolic resin and draped in a star shape over a liner-shaped mould, where they were subjected to pressure to form a liner. The liner could be worn alone without the steel shell for duty that did not involve combat or combat training.

The Eighth U.S. Army has served as America's forward-deployed field army on the Korean Peninsula since the Korean War. By 1969, it was deeply embedded in U.S. and ROK joint defence strategy, overseeing U.S. forces stationed along the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and supporting Korean military readiness during the Cold War and Vietnam-era tensions.

Honor Guard details within Eighth Army carried out formal military ceremonies, repatriation duties, and diplomatic events, often wearing customized helmets like this one. The painted decals and insignia suggest use by a ceremonial guard unit responsible for such high-visibility representation.
