Description

*German or French, Late 19th–Early 20th Century, Ornate Brass Nutcracker, Later Nazi-Era Graffiti*

A finely cast brass nutcracker, measuring approximately 14cm in length, produced in the ornate Rococo Revival style that was fashionable in continental Europe during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This example features elaborate scrollwork, stylised beading, and curvilinear detailing throughout. Such designs were common in southern Germany—particularly in Bavaria and Württemberg—where cast brass household items were made with decorative flair, though generally more restrained than their French counterparts. France was especially known for its Rococo Revival domestic wares during the same period, often producing nutcrackers, letter openers, and desk accessories in cast brass or bronze with richly ornate motifs.

One handle bears an engraved monogram ("CC" or similar) within a shield-shaped cartouche. The flat striking end has been scratched with a crown and a crude swastika, likely added much later. These markings do not align with formal Nazi-era manufacture and appear to be personal graffiti added circa WW2.

*Condition*
Good overall condition with a functioning hinge. The brass has developed an aged patina, with verdigris in some recessed areas and light surface wear consistent with age. The swastika and crown are scratched rather than cast or stamped, indicating they were added after production. Please refer to photographs as part of the condition report.
