Description

*German, WW1, Flechette Dart, Original Example*

Original German World War I flechette dart, used as an early form of aerial anti-personnel weapon. Constructed entirely of steel, this example measures approximately 12.7cm in length and features a sharply tapered point with integral stabilizing tail fins. These darts were dropped in large numbers from aircraft over enemy trenches, designed to penetrate helmets and cause injury through sheer kinetic energy.

Historical Note:
Flechettes were first introduced during the early years of the First World War (circa 1914–1916) as a novel psychological and physical weapon. Pilots carried bundles of these needle-like projectiles and released them above enemy lines, allowing them to fall point-down at high speed thanks to the finned design. While they were not highly effective in terms of casualties, they served as an intimidating form of trench harassment before more advanced aerial bombs and machine guns became widespread. German flechettes were usually simple in construction and often unmarked, as seen on this example.

*Condition*
The dart remains structurally sound, with all fins intact and no major deformations. There is moderate surface corrosion and pitting throughout, consistent with age and possible ground recovery. The pointed tip shows wear but retains its original shape. Overall, a well-preserved and authentic piece of early military aviation history. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
