Description

*Imperial German, WW1, 37mm Pom-Pom Round, Karlsruhe Arsenal, Tracer Plug & Inspection Marks, Dated 1915, Inert*

A scarce and well-preserved German First World War 37mm Pom-Pom cannon round, dated 1915 and manufactured by the state munitions factory at Karlsruhe. This brass-cased round measures approximately 17cm in overall height with a base diameter of 4.4cm, corresponding to the 37×94R calibre used in Maxim 1-pounder “Pom-Pom” guns and 37mm Hotchkiss revolving cannon. These fast-firing light artillery pieces were used extensively by naval forces, coastal batteries, and trench units for close-range defence against advancing infantry, small craft, or airships.

The headstamp is clearly engraved: “PATRONENFABRIK KARLSRUHE 1915 119A”, flanked by two flaming grenade insignia—standard Imperial German ordnance inspection marks.  The projectile is fitted with a copper driving band, and a brass nose plug. It is tightly fitted to the original brass cartridge case, which shows signs of wartime manufacture and age.

Historical Note:
The 37mm “Pom-Pom” and Hotchkiss guns date back to the late 19th century but continued in use throughout WW1 in both naval and ground roles. German forces employed these weapons aboard smaller naval vessels, at U-boat bases, and in fortress installations where fast-firing light armament was required. By 1915, ammunition production had shifted to large state arsenals such as Karlsruhe, which produced millions of such rounds for the war effort. These small-calibre cannon rounds represent an important evolution in rapid-fire support weaponry before the widespread deployment of heavier automatic artillery.

*Condition*
In good original condition overall. The brass cartridge case retains an attractive golden patina with light surface wear, scattered marks, and some tarnish consistent with age. Headstamp and arsenal markings are fully legible and well-struck. The projectile has a dark rusted finish to the steel body and intact copper driving band. Nose plug remains firmly in place. A fine example of early WW1 German ordnance. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
