Description

*Swedish WW2, Coastal Artillery (Kustartilleriet) M/1939 Field Tunic, Anchor Buttons, Crossed Cannon Collar Patches*

An original Swedish Coastal Artillery (Kustartilleriet) M/1939 field tunic constructed in heavy grey-green wool and retaining its original naval issue anchor buttons and embroidered branch collar patches.

The tunic follows the standard Swedish M/1939 field uniform pattern, featuring four front pockets with buttoned flaps, two large rear equipment pockets, a stand-and-fall collar, and a straight rear seam. The garment is made from the distinctive Swedish grey-green wool cloth commonly associated with wartime uniforms and field service dress.

The collar retains its original pale green branch patches embroidered in yellow thread with crossed artillery barrels above a flaming grenade, the recognised insignia of the Swedish Coastal Artillery. These troops formed part of the Royal Swedish Navy, which is reflected in the use of the original anchor-pattern buttons fitted throughout the tunic.

Internally the jacket retains its original cotton lining together with a sewn size label reading “N 100 M”, indicating a chest size of approximately 100 cm, with normal height and medium build according to Swedish military uniform sizing conventions. A faint Tre Kronor (Three Crowns) acceptance stamp is also visible to the interior below the collar on the back, representing the Swedish government inspection and ownership mark applied when the garment was accepted into military service.

The Coastal Artillery adopted the Army’s M/1939 style field uniform during the Second World War period to provide more practical field clothing for personnel serving in coastal batteries, artillery positions and defensive installations guarding Sweden’s extensive Baltic coastline.

Approx. Measurements – Shoulder width: 46 cm. Sleeve length: 62.5 cm. Overall length (hem to top of collar): 75 cm.

History Note:
The Swedish Coastal Artillery (Kustartilleriet) was responsible for defending Sweden’s coastline, naval bases, and archipelagos through a network of fixed artillery batteries, coastal fortifications, and minefields. Although Sweden remained neutral during the Second World War, the country maintained full mobilization and strong coastal defences to deter potential invasion from either Axis or Allied forces.

Coastal artillery units guarded critical maritime approaches including the Stockholm archipelago and key naval ports along the Baltic Sea. During the war years the branch adopted practical field uniforms based on the Army’s M/1939 design, distinguished by naval anchor buttons and coastal artillery insignia such as those seen on this example.

*Condition*
Service worn example showing signs of age and use consistent with field service. The wool remains generally sound with light surface wear visible in places. The original anchor buttons remain fitted. The collar retains its original coastal artillery embroidered insignia. The interior lining remains present together with the original size label. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
