Description

*Bulgaria, Cold War Era, Bulgarian People’s Army (БНА) Officer’s Greatcoat – Infantry Branch “Shinel” with Lion Buttons, Shoulder Patch & “Warrior-Sportsman” (Воин-Спортсмен) Badges, Hristo Botev Factory, Kalofer*

An original Cold War era Bulgarian People’s Army officer’s winter greatcoat (Shinel), constructed from heavy olive-brown wool and retaining its original insignia, factory label and distinctive Bulgarian military fittings. The coat follows the classic Eastern Bloc officer’s double-breasted pattern, designed for winter field and garrison wear during the socialist period.

The front closes with two vertical rows of gilt Bulgarian military buttons bearing the national lion emblem. The collar retains red-piped officer’s collar patches fitted with metal “Warrior-Sportsman” (Воин-Спортсмен) qualification badges, a Soviet-influenced military fitness award worn by soldiers who achieved high standards in physical and military sports training.

Matching officer’s shoulder boards are present, edged with red piping and decorated with a twisted cord in the Bulgarian national colours of red, white and green. These colours are typically associated with infantry formations of the Bulgarian People’s Army. A Bulgarian national lion shield sleeve patch is fitted to the upper arm. This plasticised style of patch became common on Bulgarian military uniforms during the late Cold War and early post-communist transition period, often appearing on field uniforms in the late 1980s and 1990s.

The rear of the coat retains the traditional officer’s waist belt tab with two lion buttons, while the interior retains its original green quilted winter lining designed to provide insulation in cold weather conditions.

Internally the coat retains its original factory label confirming official military manufacture. The label reads:
МО – Ministerstvo na Obranata (Ministry of Defence), confirming Bulgarian military issue.
ЗАВОД – Factory
ХР. БОТЕВ – Hristo Botev Quartermaster Factory
КАЛОФЕР – Kalofer, Bulgaria

This identifies the garment as produced by the well-known Hristo Botev military uniform factory at Kalofer, one of the principal Bulgarian state textile plants responsible for producing uniforms for the Bulgarian People’s Army during the Cold War period.

Approx. Measurements – Shoulder width: 49 cm. Overall length (hem to top of collar): 114 cm. Sleeve length: 65 cm.

History Note:
The Bulgarian People’s Army (Balgarska Narodna Armiya – BNA) served as the armed forces of the socialist People’s Republic of Bulgaria from 1946 until 1990, operating as part of the Warsaw Pact alongside Soviet and Eastern Bloc armies. Bulgarian officer uniforms of this period closely followed Soviet design influences while incorporating national elements such as the Bulgarian lion emblem and national tricolour. Heavy wool “Shinel” style greatcoats were standard winter outerwear for officers and soldiers throughout the Cold War. These coats were designed for harsh continental winters and remained in use from the 1950s through the late 1980s.

The “Warrior-Sportsman” (Воин-Спортсмен) badges fitted to the collar reflect the strong emphasis placed by socialist militaries on physical fitness and military sport. These qualification badges were awarded to soldiers who achieved prescribed standards in athletics, marksmanship and field exercises. The badges themselves were produced at the Hristo Botev military factory in Kalofer, the same state uniform production facility identified on the coat’s label. The reverse of the badge bears the factory maker’s mark — an arrow within a circular emblem — confirming manufacture at the Kalofer works. The factory referenced on the label — Zavod “Hr. Botev”, Kalofer — was one of Bulgaria’s principal state military clothing plants during the Cold War and produced large quantities of uniforms, insignia and equipment for the Bulgarian People’s Army.

*Condition*
The coat remains in good vintage military condition with signs of service wear consistent with age and use. The heavy wool exterior shows light wear and minor surface marks but remains structurally sound. The gilt Bulgarian lion buttons are all present and retain good definition. The collar patches, Warrior-Sportsman badges and shoulder boards remain securely fitted. The sleeve lion patch appears to be a later style rubberised insignia consistent with late Cold War or post-Cold War Bulgarian service. The lower hem of the coat is raw and unfinished, which is occasionally encountered on surplus or tailor-adjusted examples where the length was altered for the wearer. The interior lining remains intact with the original factory label still present, though the ink stamps are partially faded. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
