Description

*French Line, c.1960s, Ocean Liner France Cap Tally (Ruban de Bachi), Compagnie Générale Transatlantique*

An attractive vintage cap tally (ruban de bachi) from the famous French ocean liner France, operated by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT), internationally known as the French Line.

The ribbon is manufactured in light blue satin and embroidered in bright yellow thread with the ship’s name “FRANCE” centrally. To the left is the French tricolour flag, while the right side bears the distinctive CGT house flag incorporating the red globe emblem and the lettering “Cie Gle Transatlantique”, an abbreviation for Compagnie Générale Transatlantique. Decorative yellow tassel motifs accompany both flags.

Approx. Measurements – Length: 65 cm. Width: 3 cm.

Historical Note:
Cap tallies of this type were traditionally worn around the base of a sailor’s cap (bachi). During the mid-20th century they were also widely produced as souvenirs aboard French Line vessels and were often given to passengers—particularly children—during themed evenings and shipboard events.

The ocean liner France, launched in 1960 and entering service in 1962, was the final great transatlantic flagship of the French Line and one of the most celebrated liners of the jet-age era. Souvenirs bearing the ship’s name became popular keepsakes for passengers crossing the Atlantic during the 1960s and early 1970s.

*Condition*
In pretty good overall condition for a textile souvenir of this type. Some light staining and minor marks visible to the ribbon, along with slight fraying to the ends where the ribbon was previously tied. Embroidery remains bright and clear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
