*British, WW2 era, The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment) Brass Cap Badge, with Slider Fitting*
A good original brass cap badge of The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment), featuring the regiment’s distinctive dragon standing upon a grassy mound above the scroll title “THE BUFFS.” This well-known design was worn by the regiment from approximately 1935 until amalgamation changes in the late 1950s.
The dragon badge is one of the most recognisable British infantry insignia, granted in 1707 and long associated with the regiment’s proud identity. The regiment itself traced its origins back to the 16th century and was one of the oldest line infantry regiments in the British Army, later titled The Buffs (Royal East Kent Regiment).
This example is die-struck in brass/gilding metal and retains its original vertical slider fitting to the reverse, typical of service-worn cap badges for forage caps, berets, and side caps. The detailing remains clear, including the scaled dragon, wing structure, and banner scroll. A desirable original piece of British regimental insignia with strong display appeal.
Approx. Measurements – Height: 4.5 cm. Width: 4 cm.
History Note:
The dragon emblem is traditionally linked to the regiment’s early history and was formally confirmed as part of the regimental badge under Queen Anne. The title “The Buffs” derived from the distinctive buff-coloured facings worn by the regiment in earlier centuries. During both World Wars, The Buffs served with distinction across numerous theatres, and the regiment remained an important part of British military history until its later amalgamation into The Queen’s Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment in 1961.
*Condition*
Good original condition with honest service wear and age-related patina throughout. Some light verdigris and surface oxidation visible to the reverse and around recessed areas, consistent with age. Slider fitting remains present and secure. Front displays well with strong definition and pleasing untouched finish. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
