*British, Dated 1985/86, 30mm AFV RARDEN Round, RG Radway Green / CY Chorley, Inert*
A good original British 30mm AFV RARDEN autocannon round display piece, comprising a brass cartridge case and separate projectile. The case is clearly marked 30mm AFV, with RG for Royal Ordnance Factory Radway Green, 85 for 1985, and lot number 333. The primer is marked 285 / L17A2 / CY / 03/86, indicating an L17A2 primer produced or assembled at Royal Ordnance Factory Chorley in March 1986.
The RARDEN 30mm system was used on British armoured fighting vehicles including the FV107 Scimitar and later the FV510 Warrior. The “30mm AFV” marking identifies this as ammunition for armoured fighting vehicle use, rather than aircraft or naval application.
Approx. Measurements – Case height: 26 cm. Base diameter: 4.3 cm.
History Note:
The 30mm RARDEN cannon was one of the principal British AFV weapons of the Cold War period, chambered for the 30 x 170mm round and used across reconnaissance and infantry fighting vehicle platforms. Radway Green-manufactured cases are typical of British service production, with primer components often separately marked by another Royal Ordnance facility, as seen here with the CY Chorley primer.
*Condition*
The brass case shows age-related tarnish, handling marks, surface wear and light staining, with clear base markings. The primer is present and appears struck/spent. The projectile shows surface oxidation and finish loss, with a pale nose section and rusting to the steel body. Completely inert, empty and free from all explosive or energetic material. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
A desirable Cold War British AFV ammunition display round, clearly marked to Radway Green and Chorley, representing the 30mm RARDEN system used on iconic British armoured vehicles.
