Description

~ 1827 Pattern Royal Navy Officers Sword with Scabbard and Case ~

The original Royal Naval sword was designed in 1805, although elegant in design it proved impractical and was replaced in 1827 by the solid hilt variant. In 1846 the Royal Naval blade was standardised for all Royal Naval officers, with the current lighter, straight single-edged blade being commissioned into service in 1929.

This particular sword features a blade engraved with both Admiralty and Elizabeth II seals. The hand guard has a hinged flap to lock the blade into the scabbard. The blade features the stamp of Gieves, the sword maker. The handguard features the initials A. C. Cowin, R.N. The scabbard is made of leather with ornate brass fittings. The handguard also features the Admiralty seal. The pommel contains 24 karat gold in the Lions head. The leather case is inscribed with the initials A.C.C.

*Condition*

The sword is in excellent condition. The ornate engravings on the blade are well preserved and the blade itself shows very minimal wear. The brass handguard is immaculate. The knot is in very good condition with all its stitching intact. The handle is in pristine condition. The scabbard is in excellent condition with no visible marks or wear. The leather case is in good condition with some of the stitching being loose and the leather having some age-related marks. Please see the photos as they form part of our condition report.
