A 19th Century Russian Khanjali Dagger

A khanjali is a double-edged dagger (or rather a short sword) with a single off-set groove on each face of the blade. The shape of the weapon is similar to the ancient Greek Xiphos, the Roman Gladius, or the Scottish dirk; and has been used as a secondary weapon in Georgia and the Caucasus since ancient times.

The dagger comes with its original scabbard. The guard of the dagger and the locket of the scabbard are made of foliage decorated silver on a blued background.

Two identical decorative half balls can be seen on attached both to the hand guard section and pommel.

The grip is made of carved wood.

The fullered blade is proof-stamped on both sides.

The scabbard is made of black leather dressed wood with a silver locket, as described, and a white metal finial enveloping the outer side of the scabbard on half of its length.

~ Dimensions ~

The blade is 39 cm (15 ¼ inches) and the overall length of the piece in its scabbard is 53 cm (21 inches).

It weighs 810 grams.

~ Condition ~

The piece is in fair condition for its age.

The blade bears the scars of many fights, with a significant number of nicks and a broken tip.

The steel developed a nice patina though and the stamps are clear. It is rust-free.

The scabbard is excellent as well and the silver decorations remain intact.
