Description

The bowie knife is an iconic blade loosely defined by its size and shape. The blade was invented in the early 19th century by Rezin Bowie, the brother of Jim Bowie. American historian, Russell T Johnson stated that the Bowie knife was “…long enough to use as a sword, sharp enough to use as a razor, wide enough to use as a paddle, and heavy enough to use as a hatchet.” The length of the blade is approximately 10 ½ inches (26cm), with a total length of 15 ¾ inches (40cm) and the name “Timmy” has been scratched into the base. This knife was made for the confederate army in the American civil war between 1861 and 1865. It was likely made by John Brown at Atlas Works, Carlisle St. Sheffield.

*Condition*

This knife is in very good condition for its age and use. The blunt side of the blade has many knocks and dents likely due to the owner knocking it with a hammer for cutting wood. The grip remains strong with no visible damage – just some exposed thread. The crossguard is very slightly loose. Please see pictures for more detail.
