Admiralty pattern, CEAG Ltd, divers chromed brass safety torch. Very weighty and well designed with its protective feet to protect the glass domed front. It comes with a chrome leather wrist-strap which is sewn on (as was the case with older torches).
Before NATO stock coding became more widely used, earlier MOD torches often have a simple four-digit group of AP numbers such as AP4456 or AP4458. Admiralty Pattern Nos were used from 1885 till the late 1950s early 1960s. 4 pronged torches were produced from the 1930s-1960s.
CEAG Ltd, (Carl E. Auer Lighting Company), Barnsley & London, formed in 1912, still produces lighting equipment for civilian and military uses.
Background:
Diver’s Submarine Electric Torches were designed specifically for providing illumination during close-up underwater tasks. These torches needed to be self-sufficient, with older models typically powered by rechargeable accumulator batteries. Some versions were equipped with an on/off switch to conserve battery life, which, when fully charged, could provide around seven hours of use. The lens was often convex, enhancing and magnifying the light, while protective grills or prongs were sometimes added to shield the glass from impact. Made from non-corrosive, non-ferrous metals, these torches were durable and resistant to the harsh underwater environment.
