*British, SA80 Bayonet (L3A1) with Scabbard and DPM Frog, Mint Condition*
A superb example of the British Army issue SA80 bayonet (L3A1 pattern), complete with its multi-purpose scabbard and 1996-dated DPM (Disruptive Pattern Material) nylon frog. The bayonet measures 17.7 cm blade length and 28 cm overall, with a hollow steel hilt designed to fit over the SA80 rifle’s flash eliminator. The blade features the characteristic wire-cutter slot and mounting hole.
The scabbard is equally functional, incorporating a hooked wire-cutter attachment, folding saw blade, sharpening stone, and bottle opener, making it one of the most versatile bayonet scabbards of the modern era. The nylon frog is DPM camouflage, IRR-treated, and clearly labelled “FROG BAYONET, DPM, IRR, JACON 1996, NSN 8465-99-132-1567”, confirming official British Army manufacture and issue.
Historical Note:
The L3A1 SA80 bayonet was introduced in the mid-1980s alongside the L85A1 rifle as part of the SA80 small arms family. Unlike earlier British bayonets, it was purpose-designed as both a fighting knife and a field tool. When paired with the scabbard, it could cut through barbed wire, saw wood, sharpen tools, and open bottles. This versatility was heavily influenced by Cold War doctrine and lessons from modern combat environments.
The bayonet saw widespread service in the Gulf War, Balkans, Iraq, and Afghanistan, and remains an instantly recognisable piece of British military equipment. DPM frogs such as this 1996-dated example are correct for the mid-to-late 1990s issue period.
*Condition*
This bayonet is presented in mint condition, with a bright blade showing only minor storage marks and no signs of service use. The black composite grip is intact and undamaged, with a crisp locking catch. The scabbard retains its full finish, with clean wire-cutter blade, functional saw, and sharpening stone. The DPM frog is vibrant, with strong stitching, clear label, and fully working press-studs. A first-class collector’s piece. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
