Description

*British, WW2, Fairbairn–Sykes 3rd Pattern Fighting Knife, B2 Marked Crossguard, No.5 Pommel, Original Scabbard*

A genuine and well-presented World War Two Fairbairn–Sykes 3rd Pattern fighting knife, complete with its original leather scabbard. This is a solid wartime example, retaining correct construction throughout and showing clear service age.

The knife displays all the expected characteristics of the 3rd Pattern, including the ribbed cast alloy grip, oval steel crossguard, and double-edged spear-point blade. Introduced from 1943 onwards, the 3rd Pattern was designed for simplified mass production under Ministry of Supply control, while maintaining the essential close-combat effectiveness of the earlier designs.

Of particular note, the crossguard is stamped “B2”, with no accompanying Broad Arrow or ⩚ device visible. The “B2” stamp, a wartime Ministry of Supply inspection mark identified through research as being associated with Wilkinson Sword production. This marking is recorded on Fairbairn–Sykes knives and is most commonly encountered on 2nd Pattern examples, though it is also seen on 3rd Pattern knives such as this.

The pommel carries a clear “5” casting number, identifying the mould cavity used during manufacture—a standard wartime production feature seen across multiple contractors.

A straightforward, honest wartime FS dagger with good form and correct period features.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 16.5 cm. Overall length: 28.6 cm.

History Note:
The Fairbairn–Sykes fighting knife was introduced in 1941 for British Commandos and special operations units, quickly becoming one of the most iconic edged weapons of the Second World War. Designed by William E. Fairbairn and Eric A. Sykes, the knife was optimised for close-quarters combat, particularly thrusting attacks.

By mid-war, the 3rd Pattern was introduced to meet increasing demand, simplifying manufacture and allowing production by multiple contractors under Ministry of Supply supervision. These knives were widely issued to Commandos, airborne troops, SOE operatives, and other specialist units throughout the latter part of the war.

*Condition*
Please see photographs as part of the condition report. An honest wartime example showing clear age and use. The blade retains its correct profile, with areas of patina, light pitting, and evidence of sharpening consistent with service life. The crossguard shows oxidation and wear, with the B2 stamp visible. The ribbed alloy grip remains structurally sound, with typical surface wear and oxidation. The pommel retains a clear “5” mould number, with expected wear to the end cap. The original leather scabbard is present but well worn. The retaining loops and tabs are intact. Overall, a complete and untouched piece with strong originality and genuine period character.
