~ Early 20th C. Pair Of Norwegian Silver Squat Candlesticks By Thorvald Marthinsen ~
A nice late 19th/early 20th century pair of Norwegian .830 silver candlesticks by Thorvald Marthinsen.
The candlesticks are of squat octagonal design with cast border decoration and weighted bases.
They both bear the Norwegian silver mark of ‘830S’, the no. ‘8038’ and have a symbol of a chalice within an oval which is the makers mark of ‘Thorvald Marthinsen Sølvvarefabrik’ based in Tonsberg, Norway.
In Norway in 1892, silver fineness was standardized at .830 and the mark 830S became compulsory. By 1920, the standard .925 started to replace the .830 purity.
~ Dimensions ~
The candlesticks both have base measurement of 9.5cm (3 ¾ inches) by 9.5cm (3 ¾ inches).
Both have a height of 7.5cm (3 inches).
Together they weigh 385g.
~ Condition ~
One candlestick has an ever so slight lean to it and the other has a reasonable dent.
They both have a few little marks but nothing significant and otherwise present very well.
