~ Emile Gallé (1846-1904) Cameo Glass Vase With Wild Floral Decoration ~
A beautiful Art Nouveau cameo glass vase by Émile Gallé. The vase has been carved in a wild flower design with a deep purple surface giving way to a whiter glass beneath. The frosting gives the vase a rich velvety texture which compliments the gloss of the surface decoration adding a sense of depth to the piece.
It is signed “Galle” in the lower section of the vase.
~ Cameo ~
Cameo is multi-layered glass on which a picture has been carved through glass the layers so that it stands out in relief from the surface. The colored layers form the contrasts of the picture.
The word cameo actually applies to any carving in which the picture is raised above the surrounding surface; but in the glass world it is only used for carving where there is more than one colored layer to the glass.
