Description

*European, late 19th century, Renaissance Revival Decorative Cup-Hilt Rapier, Figural Grip, Etched Blade*

An attractive decorative rapier in Renaissance Revival style, with long slender blade and elaborate gilt or bronze-toned hilt. The guard is formed as a pierced cup with fluted radiating panels and scalloped border, together with straight quillons and a curved knuckle-bow. The grip is cast in relief with reclining classical nude figures in Renaissance taste, terminating in a turned pommel. The blade is of slender rectangular section and retains etched decoration incorporating hunting or battle scenes.

Approx. Measurements – Blade length: 84.8 cm. Overall length: 104.5 cm.

Historical Note:
Although inspired by 16th–17th century cup-hilt rapiers, this example is a later decorative piece produced during the 19th-century Renaissance Revival period, when historical European sword forms were widely reproduced for display, theatrical use, and collectors’ cabinets. The figural cast grip, pierced cup guard and etched blade decoration are typical of continental European decorative manufacture, possibly Spanish, Italian or French, made for ornamental rather than military use.

*Condition*
Overall in fair decorative condition. The hilt retains an aged dark patina with surface wear and areas of verdigris. The cup guard is complete. The blade shows overall greying, spotting and surface corrosion, with wear to the etched decoration but the scenes remain visible. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
