~ Mid 19th Century Mintons-Mortlock Armorial Set Of 12 ~
A nice twelve piece china dinner set with heraldic crest by Mintons for William Mortlock of Regent Street, London dating between 1857 and 1877.
The set consists of six plates, four bowls and a tureen with under-plate.
The pieces are of white china with a light blue border and gilt edging.
Each piece features a coat of arms crest comprising of a red dragon within a blue sash with the motto ‘Toujours Prest’ which translates as ‘Always Ready’.
The tureen plate is decorated in the same manner but also has two side handles of twisted form with raised floral decoration with gilt detailing running onto the edge of the plate.
The tureen itself also has the decorative handles and a lid with floral finial.
The items have some variation in markings and dates, presumably the family whose crest the items bear had a long standing arrangement with Mortlocks and purchased extra items over the years.
Four of the plates and two of the bowls bear the ‘Mortlock, London’ factory marks and an impressed ‘Mintons’ mark with the date mark of 1865.
Two of the plates and two of the bowls bear a slightly different mark reading ‘Mintons China From William Mortlock’. The bowls and one plate also have the Mintons stamp and bear the date of 1877 while the other plate has no further marks.
The tureen plate has the ‘Mortlock, London’ mark and the ‘Mintons’ impressed mark with the date of 1857 while the tureen just has the ‘Mortlock, London’ mark.
~ Dimensions ~
The bowls and plates each have a diameter of 25.5cm (10 inches).
The tureen plate measures 22cm (8 ½ inches) across the handles.
The tureen measures 17cm (6 ¾ inches) across the handles and 15cm (6 inches) in height.
The set weighs 7.57 Kg.
~ Condition ~
One of the plates and the tureen under-plate both have a small hairline crack to the edge (measuring approx. 2cm). The rest of the plates and bowls are all damage free but have some wear in varying degrees to the gilt edging and the odd tiny bit of wear to the glaze. One plate has paint reasonable paint loss (see images).
The tureen has quite a few cracks with some evidence of repair.
Overall the set is in quite a good condition and presents well.
