*SWISS SIG Stgw M1957 Bayonet with Scabbard*
This bayonet and scabbard are designed for use with the Swiss SIG Stgw (Sturmgewehr)57 assault rifle, which was in production from 1957 to 1983. The bayonet features a ribbed plastic grip with a release catch located at the rear of the pommel and a front cross guard. The blade is double-edged with a spear point and bears a W stamp on one side of the ricasso over serial number ‘439878’. The ‘W’ indicates that the blade was produced by Wenger & Co. of Delemont. On the obverse side, there is a ‘WF’ motif, denoting assembly by Waffenfabrik Bern. The grip displays the letter ‘G over M’. 26.7cm blade, 37cm overall.
It comes with a plastic scabbard, marked with several inscriptions: “82” inside a starburst within a circle, “B over 3015 over 2” inside a circle, and “K9” inside another circle. Additionally, there is a ‘P’ on the scabbard throat, indicating that the scabbard was made by Paillard AG of St. Croix. This type of scabbard no longer has the leather securing tab, so it would typically be carried using the frogs intended for the M1957 and M1990 bayonets.
The Stgw 57, or Assault Rifle 57, served as the Swiss Army’s standard weapon from 1957 until its replacement by the Assault Rifle 90 in the 1990s. It superseded the Modell 1931 Carbine, the light machine gun, and most of the submachine guns by the late 1950s. The Stgw 57 is a relatively long (approximately 110cm) and heavy (approximately 6kg) firearm chambered in caliber 7.5 x 55 (7.5mm GP11), allowing for both single and fully automatic firing modes.
