~ French Tin-Glaze Polychrome Pitcher With Pewter Cover ~
An uncommon item, this is a French hand painted tin glaze pitcher with hinged lid attached.
Designed in the style of the popular German “Birnkrug” (meaning pear-shaped jug), but with a much more pronounced neck and a shaped and painted lid as opposed to plain pewter.
The decoration shows a cornucopia, flora and flying insects in blue, yellow, a mossy green and a light reddish sienna.
The handle is very graceful and along with the pinched neck, is decorated with a stripe of blue.
A mark on the base of the vessel shows the letters CA.
~ Dimensions ~
The piece is 10 inches tall (25.5 cm).
The base has a diameter of 4 inches (10cm) and at its widest, the body of the pitcher is 5.5 inches (14 cm) in diameter.
It weighs 940g.
~ Condition ~
The glaze has one tiny, tiny flaw beneath the lip of the pourer, otherwise this is in perfect condition.
The pewter hinge opens and closes perfectly smoothly.
