~ 19th Century Military Campaign Camphor Wood Roll Top Writing Slope ~
A handsome camphor wood military campaign writing slope from the 19th century.
The piece is made from camphor wood, brass bound at the edges and features a two colour wood tambour roll top.
The top panel is ebony strung with a central brass cartouche.
The front panel/drawer is also ebony strung with a brass lock plate with flush handle.
The drawer to the front opens to activate the tambour roll top to slide back.
This reveals a lift up section with pigeonholes compartments. This section locks into place with press spring fittings.
The slope folds open to reveal a green baize writing surface and the usual compartments for pens and inks, two with fitted lids and a long compartment with an unusual wood bar/pole cover.
The writing surface lifts to the rear to reveal a storage area.
To the rear of the storage area is a spring loaded wood panel which is removable and reveals two hidden drawers.
~ Dimensions ~
The slope when closed measures 36cm (18 inches) wide, 37cm (14 ½ inches) deep and has a height of 23cm (9 inches).
When open it measures 58cm (22 ¾ inches) front to back.
It weighs 8.09Kg.
~ Condition ~
There is some general wear to the finish and some scratches to the outside.
A couple of the screws are missing from the brass binding.
There are two small sections of darker wood to the front above the hinges which are presumably from restoration.
There is a significant hole in the bottom of the front drawer where the lock has been forcibly removed at some point.
The pull down part of the slope is missing part of the veneer along the edge.
The baize is a little tatty but intact.
The removable panel inside the storage area has a few deep scratches.
