Description

*British, early issue c1950, RAF Type-D Survival Knife & Original Leather Sheath, by Wilkinson Sword Ltd*

18cm blade, 31.5cm overall.

Marked on ricasso "Wilkinson Sword Ltd" followed by "Regd Design App For". On the reverse "27C/2630 War Arrow".

The Type D Survival knife, following several prototypes, was officially introduced into service in the early 1950s. Various manufacturers produced these knives, which were subsequently issued to all branches of the British Military. The blades featured specific designations to indicate the branch of service they were intended for. Blades with codes starting with 27C were designated for the RAF, as detailed on pages 101 and 102 of Flook's book 'British & Commonwealth Fighting Knives.' The ricasso bears the inscription "Wilkinson Sword Ltd," followed by "Regd Design App For." On the reverse, the RAF stores code "27C/2630" followed by a War Arrow. Other early examples may display the Army/RAF designation 1B/4594, while later versions carry the NATO Stores code 5110-99-127-8214 and the designation "Knife, Survival. Type D."

This is a scarce early issue RAF Type-D survival knife by Wilkinson with its correct pattern leather scabbard. It has a heavy 180mm parkerized bowie blade. Hardwood grip scales are secured to the full width solid tang with two early pattern screw bolts and washers - later examples have copper rivets. The pommel has a lanyard inlet. Complete with original brown leather scabbard, with the iconic "Lift the dot" fastener.

*Condition*
In excellent used condition with a very good blade. The grip has the owners initials SPD scratched into both sides. Leather scabbard is in good condition with rivets and stitching intact and working press stud. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
