    Description

*British, 1845 Pattern Royal Navy Boarding Cutlass*

29.5″/75cm blade. Steel double edged spear point blade of compressed diamond section, bowl hilt and ribbed metal grip.

The 1845 pattern cutlass stands as an iconic British Naval Sword, issued to sailors in the mid-19th century Royal Navy. Introduced around 1845 after experimental designs and a Tower of London fire delayed its acceptance, this cutlass had the longest blade among uniform cutlasses. Featuring a flat-backed blade with an acute spear point ideal for thrusting, it reflected trends in cavalry swords. The bowl guard lacked quillons, tapering towards the pommel. It had a small burr pommel and a slot for a sword knot and this weak area of the guard was reinforced by being turned downwards, away from the grip. It served as a versatile weapon for sailors in boarding actions and maintaining order aboard ships. This design was influenced by practical considerations for maritime combat, making it an enduring symbol of naval history.

    *Condition*
Good used condition. Some rust and pitting marks to blade but great unblunted spear point. Without scabbard. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
