*German, WW2, Third Reich Luftschultz – Air defense – Helmet*
A WW2 Third Reich Luftschultz Helmet, size Q62, numbered 141, with replacement brown leather liner and chinstrap. WII German Luftschutz gladiator style steel helmet. Three piece construction helmet with winged transfer decal to front. Overall a very nice example of a German Air Defence helmet.
The Air Protection Warning Service (Luftschutzwarndienst or LSW), mostly run by volunteers, operated in cities at high risk of bombing alongside the Police and Fire organizations. They were responsible for warning of air raids, but their duties included more than watching the skies. They interpreted attack reports, managed searchlights, observed bomber formations, maintained civilian order during attacks, and activated air raid sirens. In April 1943, Hermann Göring made Luftschutz service mandatory for all Germans, including women. Luftschutz personnel were required to provide their own helmets, costing about 5 Reich Marks. The lightweight gladiator-style helmets were the most common choice among Luftschutz personnel. All helmets used by Luftschutz members were painted a medium to dark black-blue colour and bore the distinctive winged insignia decal on the front.
