~ Pair Of Late Victorian Rococo Style European Vases ~
A lovely pair of late Victorian Rococo style vases each hand painted and featuring images of German folklore.
The vases are of baluster form with flared necks and feet and both with twin handles.
They are in a deep blue glaze with raised foliate decoration painted in colours with gilt highlights.
Each has a transfer printed scene to the front surrounded by a foliate border.
The scenes concern the story of Lohengrin, a character from German stories of Arthurian literature.
Lohengrin was a knight of the Holy Grail who was sent in a boat pulled by swans to rescue a girl who is falsely accused of murder. He must
never tell anyone his name His story is a version of the Knight of the Swan legend. It is particularly famous now as an opera, Lohengrin by
Richard Wagner.
One image shows Lohengrin on the boat pulled by a swan with a crowd of onlookers.
The other shows a girl, most likely the charcter Elsa, waving her handkerchief at a soldier on horseback.
The vases have raised marks of ‘576’ to the bases along with an inscribed symbol of possibly a sand timer. They are otherwise unmarked. Due to
them featuring images of German folklore we can presume the vases originate from Germany.
~ Dimensions ~
The vases each have an approximate diameter of 11.5cm (4 ½ inches) and a height of 36cm (14 inches).
Together they weigh 1.96 Kg.
~ Condition ~
There is a little crazing to the images but otherwise the vases are in a lovely condition with no cracks, chips or repairs.
