~ Victorian Majolica Table Serving Platter ~
A lovely Victorian era Majolica Serving Platter dish.
Majolica refers to a style of pottery which was fashionable during the second half of the 19th century after being introduced to the public at the Exhibitions of 1851 and 1862.
It takes the form of earthenware, coated with coloured lead glazes applied directly to an unglazed body.
Several well known companies of the time produced Majolica but this piece bears no makers stamp.
The platter is circular in form with relief-moulded decoration of leaves in green on a royal blue ground around the circumference. It has a textured green and yellow rim and a mottled green/brown glaze to the centre.
The underside of the platter has no coloured glaze.
~ Dimensions ~
The platter has a diameter of 31.5cm (12 ¼ inches) and a depth of 4.5cm (1 ¾ inches).
It weighs 1.09 Kg.
~ Condition ~
There is a little wear and a couple of tiny chips to the rim.
There is a hairline crack to the base.
There is some crazing of the glaze in parts and some marks from the firing process.
Overall the platter is in a nice condition for its age and presents well.
