Manufactured by at least six companies—Brauch & Frey Bad Wimpfen, STRIWA, BEWAG, Beckumer Lederwerk, Paul Schulze Brakel, and Modeka—this style of jacket (typically paired with high-waisted leather trousers) was utilized by submarine personnel in the German Navy (Bundesmarine) and other naval vessels from the early 1960s until 2000. BEWAG is a particularly rare brand of leather maker to find these days.
Featuring a cropped length, wide body, curved sleeves for enhanced mobility, and a large collar, it provided optimal protection against the elements. The jacket, with its nylon lining not sewn to the leather, offers excellent ventilation through gaps and armpit holes. Sturdy zippers, a foldable collar for extra protection, and an extensive lacing system for wind protection make it ideal for the open sea. Additionally, buttons along the inside collar allow for attaching an optional fur collar.
