Description

*German, WW2, 1935–37, Luftwaffe 1st Model Officer’s Dagger and Scabbard with Portepee and Chain Hanger, Adolf Braun Berlin Blade*

A highly collectible example of the early Luftwaffe officer’s dagger, known as the 1st Model, introduced in 1935 and carried until around 1937 before the introduction of the simpler 2nd Model. This elegant and impressive design embodies the prestige and pride of the newly independent Luftwaffe, showcasing an elaborate crossguard styled as sweeping downward wings, an inlaid swastika pommel, and a striking blue leather grip with twisted brass wire wrap.

This example is complete with its original blue leather-covered scabbard featuring nickel fittings and the desirable early Luftwaffe-style chain hanger, including the characteristic Thor’s hammer-style clip. The scabbard displays honest service wear, with surface scuffs, areas of leather loss, and some age-related oxidation beneath the leather, particularly around the bands and drag. The nickel fittings show a mellow, attractive patina, with period-correct screws and assembly details intact. The pommel disk exhibits genuine age wear with small edge knocks and slight inlay tarnish, further confirming the authenticity of the hilt components. Additionally, the original Luftwaffe portepee knot remains tied to the guard, showing period fraying and age toning consistent with long service or storage.

The double edged blade is a period-produced replacement marked "Adolf Braun Berlin," a rare retailer mark from a well-known Berlin outfitter active during the Third Reich era. Adolf Braun did not manufacture blades but sourced them from established Solingen makers, then added their retailer marking. These blades were produced circa late 1930s to early 1940s, making them fully period and authentic to the era.

Historical Note:
The Luftwaffe dagger holds a distinctive place in German military history. After World War I, Germany was banned from having an air force under the Treaty of Versailles. In 1933, the Nazis sidestepped this by forming the Deutscher Luftsport-Verband (DLV) — a supposed civilian flying club that served as a covert paramilitary aviation force. DLV officials wore long ceremonial daggers, symbolizing this secret rearmament.

In 1935, Hitler openly defied the treaty and established the Luftwaffe as part of the newly formed Wehrmacht. Officers adopted the 1st Model Luftwaffe dagger, a shortened and more refined version of the DLV design, embodying the modern, elite image of the air force.

The 1st Model dagger featured a blue leather-covered scabbard, blue wire-wrapped grip, and elegant nickel fittings. Its crossguard displayed a "sunwheel" swastika with stylized wings, while the pommel carried a prominent swastika disc. In 1937, the Luftwaffe introduced a simpler second model, but the first pattern remains particularly prized today for its early design and strong aviation symbolism.

The "Adolf Braun Berlin" marking refers to a well-known WW2 Berlin outfitter who retailed dress edged weapons during the Third Reich era, typically outsourcing production to Solingen manufacturers. Blades with this mark are scarce and add an extra layer of interest for collectors.

*Condition*
Very good overall display condition. The hilt assembly and scabbard are original wartime parts, showing appealing patina and characterful age-related wear. The scabbard has several areas of leather loss and some surface oxidation beneath, entirely typical for these pieces after many decades. The blade is a WW2 period replacement, bright and clean, carrying the "Adolf Braun Berlin" retailer mark. The Luftwaffe-style chain hanger is complete, with correct construction and an even, natural patina. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
