*US, Early 20th Century, Ku Klux Klan Convention Bowie Knife, 1907 Bristol Tennessee, M.C. Lilley & Co., with Tooled KKK Leather Scabbard*
A striking and controversial American Bowie knife bearing explicit Ku Klux Klan association, the blade etched “Imperial Order of / Ku Klux Klan / Convention 1907 Bristol Tenn” and stamped with the mark of The M. C. Lilley & Co., Columbus, Ohio, one of the foremost manufacturers of fraternal and ceremonial regalia in the United States. The knife is of classic Bowie form, with a broad clipped-point blade, simple brass crossguard, and wooden slab grip secured by rivets. The grip is further personalised with carved markings, “16” to one side and “H.F.” to the reverse, most likely denoting a member number, lodge designation, or original owner’s initials.
The knife is accompanied by its original heavy leather scabbard of stitched construction, the front prominently tooled with repeated “KKK” devices. The scabbard retains its belt loop and fastening strap with press stud, and displays a consistent age patina that complements the knife. The overall presentation is that of a fraternal or commemorative piece rather than a standard military or commercial Bowie, likely produced in relatively small numbers.

The inscription referencing a “1907 Bristol Tennessee” convention presents a notable historical inconsistency. Modern scholarship divides the history of the Ku Klux Klan into distinct phases, with the first organisation (1865–1871) effectively suppressed by the early 1870s, and the second, more widely known Klan not formally established until 1915. The year 1907 falls within a period during which no organised national Klan structure is known to have existed, and there is no reliable record of a convention at Bristol, Tennessee in that year. As such, the inscription is best understood as retrospective or commemorative rather than documentary of an actual 1907 event.
The maker, M.C. Lilley & Co. of Columbus, Ohio, was a highly respected supplier of uniforms, regalia, and ceremonial items to fraternal organisations, military units, and civic bodies from the mid-19th century into the early 20th century. While the company produced a wide range of edged weapons and lodge-related items, there is no confirmed direct association with the Ku Klux Klan, particularly during the period when the organisation was inactive. The combination of the Lilley mark, the style of manufacture, and comparison with known examples suggests that this knife was most likely produced in the early–mid 20th century as a commemorative or fraternal-style piece rather than as a genuine 1907 issue.

In good, honest condition overall. The blade shows general surface wear, light pitting, and age staining consistent with handling and age, but retains clear and legible etching and maker’s mark. The brass crossguard displays expected wear and patina. The wooden grip is well worn, with visible age cracks, small losses, and surface wear, and the carved markings remain clearly visible. The leather scabbard is complete and structurally sound, with heavy patina, surface wear, and some stiffness; stitching remains intact and the tooled decoration is still discernible though softened.
