~ Late 19th Century W & H Winterhalder And Hofmeier Oak Bracket Clock ~
A lovely oak bracket clock by the German maker Winterhalder and Hofmeier dating to the late 1800’s / early 1900’s.
Winterhalder and Hofmeier are one of the most famous German Victorian clockmakers. The firm was started by Anton Winterhalder in Schwarzenbach, Germany in 1810, taking Anton Hofmeier into partnership in 1850, with the business finally closing on the death of Winterhalder’s last son Linus in 1910.
The clock has an oak case of an architectural style, with carving which mimicks brick-work, a decorative carved pediment below a gable roof, reeded columns to either side of the dial and a plinth base raised on flat block feet.
There are two silk lined carved side doors and a latticework rear door for access to the movement.
The clock has a silvered dial set on a brass back-plate with gilt brass applied decoration surround. The dial has Roman numeral hours, an outer minutes ring and two steel hands. There are two secondary dials to the top, one for strike silent and the other to advance or retard the movement.
The dial is covered by a hinged glazed door.
All four doors are lockable with the side doors each having its own key and one key for both front and rear doors.
The clock has an eight day movement. The movement is stamped ‘W&H, Sch’ for Winterhalder & Hofmeier of Schwaerzenbach, Germany.
The clock strikes the hour and quarter hours on coiled gongs.
There is a beaded string to one side of the clock, which when pulled activates the chimes.
The clock is complete with winding key.
